Work Well Under Pressure

Now that we are inching up to week 36 we've gone into crunch mode! And boy what a busy, productive week we've had!

I've been doing my best to de-clutter - there really are only 2 areas that constantly need to be cleared up, the kitchen table and the counter. Those are just the 2 places everything gets dumped and left, it's a problem I have that I need to work on.

Dave put up crown molding in the babies room:

Look at those corners!!

And built the closet organizer:

He also got the car seat bases installed into the minivan.

We got in our maternity photos with Heather Liberman:

We molded my stomach with a kit my friend Cary gave me:

And I got in some craft projects...

I made myself a nursing cover up. I just couldn't resist this fabric when I saw it!

And I really wanted to crochet some baby hats but decided to try my hand at these instead. Who knows maybe they could be my first Etsy listings!

Or maybe we'll have a little girl and I can use these for our newborn photos!

From Drab on the way to Fab: Wood Paneled Bedroom

In honor of our 2 year anniversary as home owners I'm going to be posting some of the things we've done to make the house we bought into our home.

Exibit 1: Bedroom #1

We actually lived in this bedroom while we were preparing the Master Bedroom for moving in! From afar it just looks like your typical 70's style wood paneling. But don't be fooled my friends, this wood paneling was MUCH more special than that old boring stuff! Of course I had to take pictures to prove it (because unless you saw it with your own eyes you wouldn't believe it).

It's amazing we got any sleep with all those critters watching us!

The big debate we had was whether to paint over the wood paneling or remove it. We went back and forth with this for some time, reading a lot online and after pulling away some of the paneling and seeing it was both glued and nailed to the walls it was easy to make the decision.

We put down 3 coats of primer before actually putting down a couple coats of the color we picked. Dave put some new double cell honeycomb insulating shades on the windows and I made up the bed with our old bed set and we had ourselves a frumpy guest bedroom.

Until I found a new bed set on sale that matched (actually there were at least 3 I had to choose from - apparently this shade of sea green is a big hit this year).

Typical Oliver just being Oliver:
(In the 5 minutes it took me to bring all the old sheets downstairs to put in the wash he found himself a nice place to enjoy his bone!)

I think the new bed set makes the room look much nicer! Now I just need to find some material for curtains and we have to get some crown molding put up (I've come to terms with the fact that nothing is ever 100% finished and there's always going to be something else we have to do - and if we ever even get to an end point I'm going to want to re-decorate anyway!)

Has spring really sprung?!??

A couple weeks ago we had one really nice weekend day and I made the mistake of thinking of putting my winter coat away and it snowed the next day! So I was very weary of getting all excited this weekend when we had 2 beautiful days in a row (3 counting today!!) but I couldn't contain it any longer when I saw our perennial garden had begun to bloom!

Our little crocus's are all up!!! Well I can't take much credit - the woman who owned the house for 41 years before us planted this garden, it just took some time to find it under all the weeds and poison ivy when we moved in. And we only learned of the poison ivy after I'd gotten it all over my arms! But now I do my best to maintain it - and boy is it a lot of work! Mostly because I've been learning as I go but also because she did such a good job making sure something new is always in bloom, I have to do regular maintenance (which began this weekend when I spotted all the crocus and will continue up until our last day of fall raking). But I love it!!! I'm still trying to get a grasp on what I have growing in the garden so hopefully next planting season I can add a couple of my favorite flowers.

Apparently some of the ornamental grass must have been hiding pretty good when I did a thorough cleaning of the garden last year! Even the daffodil shoots are up and the iris and day lilies are just starting to pop out too and the wood peckers are back --> this has to mean spring is here to stay, right?!?!? I know, I KNOW... anything is possible in New England including snow in May so I won't be putting my winter coat away just yet but I'm VERY hopeful!

I would like to thank our TV for crapping out

In the coming spring, after we put in new carpeting in the family room we were going to get the big flat screen, high definition TV that Dave wanted to get LAST year. But luck was on his side when our current TV started crapping out a few weeks ago. (It's still under investigation whether he fiddled with something I don't know about!)

It all happened pretty fast; for a few days the TV picture would freak out and have some white lines going through it and then just fix itself after a few seconds. Then it started becoming a black screen with a white line across the middle which we figured out after a few stomps on the floor the picture would go back to normal. But before we knew it the stomps weren't working anymore! Even I was frustrated at this point, it was interfering with my shows!!

And so began the start of our family room renovations. We were planning on doing them before Christmas anyway, the passing of the TV just sped things up. And after a few incredibly busy/stressful weeks at work for Dave I'm glad he can come home and watch his sports in HD (as long as one of my 5 shows isn't on!)

So we've been busy trying to figure out re-decorating and the rooms were finally ready to be unveiled this weekend! Well minus the blu-ray DVD player and wireless surround sound that Dave wants! Those are definitely going to have to wait another year or two! I want my new siding first!

Sunday Stroll

After a rainy day spent in front of the sewing machine I needed to get out for some air and the dogs needed some energy drained. So I set out for our typical nightly walk but half way through I decided to check out a more scenic route along the water. I had never tried it with the two of them because there tend to be more people out on their after dinner walks with their dogs and our dogs always want to meet and play with every dog they see along the way so that makes for a very stressful, aggravating walk for me, not to mention how embarrassing they can be as they usually succeed in pulling me along!

It actually ended up not being that bad, if anything it's good for their leash training. And it's just about as long as our usual walk, for some reason I always thought it was going to be much longer. So now we have a new route to add to our list of walks!

Oliver was just so excited! He was dying to get down to check out the water, most likely just for a drink but... maybe we'll have a water dog after all!

When we got back I went around the yard to check out how everything was holding up in all the sogginess that has been our summer.

Our Hydrangea Tree is blooming! By the end of the week all the flowers should be in blossom.

The Lilies I got from Christmas Tree Shop are not fairing so well. I planted about 25 bulbs, 17 grew but only 3 have buds, these are the two that are currently in bloom. Hopefully next year more than 3 will produce flowers! At least each stalk has 2-3 flowers on it.

The grass Dave worked so hard on is all grown in! It looks great! I wish I had "before" pictures from last year when we moved in. Dave and our friend Tim spent a good day ripping out this entire side of our yard that was overgrown with weeds, pricker bushes, vines, small trees, you name it, it was probably in there! So this spring Dave tilled it, put down a lot of new dirt and planted all the grass seed. And surprisingly all the rain didn't wash it away and it's thriving!

Our blueberry bush

Our blueberry bush is doing awesome! Last year I didn't get to see a single ripe blueberry because all the birds got to them before I could. I think the rain has kept them away so I picked a little custard bowl full and the 4 of us had a snack before dinner. I think we are going to invest in some cheese cloth to cover up the bush next year.

We have some raspberries and blackberries that should be ready soon as well!

We have two hydrangea bushes, a blue one in the front of our house (direct sun most of the day) and this purple one on the back side of the house (mostly shady). Last year our blue one was loaded with flowers, this year nadda! The purple bush is younger so we only had a few smaller flowers last year, but this year it's loaded with big flowers! We'll see what next year brings.

Even our 15 hosta all bloomed (even the ones we split in the middle of their growing period) and have been kept in tack for the most part - at least the deer aren't bothering them (thanks to the rain??), but every now and then they get in the way of the weed whacker!

So while the rain has totally sucked this year; I'm pretty tired of having 2 hyper, soggy dogs it has had its positive side:

1.) We haven't had to do much watering, which is both a time and money saver!

2.) Just about all of our plants/flowers are flourishing.

3.) It's kept away the animals and we've gotten to enjoy some of the fruits our bushes produce.

4.) My EMS rain suit that I had to dig out of the back of a closet and dust off has become part of my every day wear. I paid so much for it 3 years ago when I thought I was going to need it for the Boston Marathon and I ended up just suffocating myself in it for 21 miles before I stripped it off and carried it for the last 5! All those bad memories have now been washed away and that purchase has become an investment rather than a waste after all!

Construction of the Man Cave begins

About 6 months ago Dave started talking about getting a Fathead and when I finally made him show me what he was talking about I told him no way! Where on earth were we going to fit a life size Jose Reyes wall sticker?? The bedroom was NOT an option nor was the family room or the living room for that matter! I put up with having framed 8x10's of a sweaty Michael Jordan and Larry Bird in our dinning area of our condo for 3.5 years and at least those I could take down if I needed, this is a permanent thing! So the purchase was vetoed and Fatheads were taken off the discussion table! Until just recently when I needed to come up with some good birthday presents for the big 3-0!

Dave rarely wants anything = hardest person to get presents for. So when he shows interest in something how can I not jump to get it?! So it may not have been a surprise but at least I know he loves it!

Precisely measuring

And I have to admit, even I think it looks pretty sweet!

Goooo Hokies!!!

I can't wait for all the Mets paraphernalia to go up next, then it's really going to look like a Man Cave! In time... we have too many other projects going on that are more important right now.

I'll be posting about Dave's other birthday present in a few more weeks!
